Samuel Barber's "Agnus Dei" |

Based on Barber's "Adagio for Strings" ~ this choral version appears, on hearing, to have been done by a small group. I am guessing it's "The Sixteen" and they do a superb job of it, with exquisite modulations, intonation, and phrasing. Although it lacks some of the drama which the climax can demonstrate when sung with more volume, the group achieves the same effect by their use of subtlety.

This extended composition beautifully reveals the ecstatic nature of the composer, particularly in this interpretation by Igor Golovschin and fellow musicians.
Golovschin, unlike other interpreters of Scriabin, extends the emotional impact of the "Divine Poem" by taking a more meditative pace for the tempi than conductors have on other recordings I am familiar with.

This is done at breakneck speed, which is flashy but goes beyond the listener's ability to hear the syncopated rhythms in the percussion section as well as among the other instruments. I could not make out the conductor's name, but prefer a more reasonable tempo.

This orchestra, always perfection, is even more alive to Igor's description with Sir Simon Rattle at the helm. Fabulous, instant intuitive cooperation among all involved. Even Stravinsky himself would allow a nod and smile.

I hope this is an anonymous review; this fellow is frequently played by SAM on weekends. It truly sounds like someone with clinical depression who is just breathing and thinking sad thoughts.
I have reviewed several compositions and many new, to me, compositions which I have come to love. Feldman's music causes me to find a different streaming station for my classical music.

These are sung by superb voices. "The Brook" is as sweet a description of child-like innocence as exists in the classical repertoire, whoever that singer is ~ I couldn't determine that.
The Polish National Orchestra demonstrates a natural, yet professional ability to perfectly support the delicate nature of many of these tunes.
We are fortunate to have this album in AFM's library.

I have been listening to Mahler's first for over forty years, and this interpretation is by far the most exciting I've ever heard. The pacing of this final movement is unique in my experience, and the ending tempo is absolutely spectacular. (It would be nice to know who the conductor is!)
