Samuel Barber - Scarlet Letter, The
Samuel Barber's "Agnus Dei"
By: bonnie
Date: 27 Oct 2012
Rating:

Based on Barber's "Adagio for Strings" ~ this choral version appears, on hearing, to have been done by a small group. I am guessing it's "The Sixteen" and they do a superb job of it, with exquisite modulations, intonation, and phrasing. Although it lacks some of the drama which the climax can demonstrate when sung with more volume, the group achieves the same effect by their use of subtlety.

Hector Berlioz - Berlioz: Great Orchestral Works [LSO, Colin Davis]
By: Max20
Date: 11 Oct 2012
Rating:

Carl Orff, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Leo Delibes (...) - Classic Experience II
Nessun Dorma from 'Turandot'

Date: 9 Oct 2012
Rating:

This tenor (not named on the album) sings with great passion, but scoops his notes and becomes quite sharp as he reaches the high points of this well known and beloved aria.

Alexander Scriabin - Symphony No. 3 The Divine Poem / Poem Of Ecstasy
Scriabin's "Divine Poem"
By: bonnie
Date: 31 Aug 2012
Rating:

This extended composition beautifully reveals the ecstatic nature of the composer, particularly in this interpretation by Igor Golovschin and fellow musicians.

Golovschin, unlike other interpreters of Scriabin, extends the emotional impact of the "Divine Poem" by taking a more meditative pace for the tempi than conductors have on other recordings I am familiar with.

Aram Khachaturian - Spartacus - Gayaneh - Masquerade
Lezghinka ~ Khachaturian
By: bonnie
Date: 18 May 2012
Rating:

This is done at breakneck speed, which is flashy but goes beyond the listener's ability to hear the syncopated rhythms in the percussion section as well as among the other instruments. I could not make out the conductor's name, but prefer a more reasonable tempo.

Igor Stravinsky - Rhythm Is It!
Rhythm is It
By: bonnie
Date: 16 May 2012
Rating:

This orchestra, always perfection, is even more alive to Igor's description with Sir Simon Rattle at the helm. Fabulous, instant intuitive cooperation among all involved. Even Stravinsky himself would allow a nod and smile.

Morton Feldman - Feldman: String Quartet No. 2 (Flux Quartet)
Feldman's String Quartet No. 2
By: bonnie
Date: 25 Feb 2012
Rating:

I hope this is an anonymous review; this fellow is frequently played by SAM on weekends. It truly sounds like someone with clinical depression who is just breathing and thinking sad thoughts.

I have reviewed several compositions and many new, to me, compositions which I have come to love. Feldman's music causes me to find a different streaming station for my classical music.

Witold Lutoslawski - Lutoslawsk: Orchestral Works (Wit, Polish National Radio SO)
Six Children's Songs
By: bonnie
Date: 18 Feb 2012
Rating:

These are sung by superb voices. "The Brook" is as sweet a description of child-like innocence as exists in the classical repertoire, whoever that singer is ~ I couldn't determine that.

The Polish National Orchestra demonstrates a natural, yet professional ability to perfectly support the delicate nature of many of these tunes.

We are fortunate to have this album in AFM's library.

Gustav Mahler - Mahler: The Complete Recordings
Final movement of Mahler's 1st Symphony
By: bonnie
Date: 7 Jan 2012
Rating:

I have been listening to Mahler's first for over forty years, and this interpretation is by far the most exciting I've ever heard. The pacing of this final movement is unique in my experience, and the ending tempo is absolutely spectacular. (It would be nice to know who the conductor is!)

Craig Russell - Russell: Rhapsody for Horn & Orch (San Luis Obispo Symphony, Michael Nowak)
Craig Russell's "Morning Decisions"
By: bonnie
Date: 1 Dec 2011
Rating:

I had not even heard of this composer before finding AFM. The music and its performance are executed with subtlety and a lush finesse which enriches the listener's perception of what was intended by Mr. Russell.
