Should we get this rare glimpse of Jerry Goldsmith being a concert works composer?
Oh absolutely, that man was a genius and there can never be enough music of him! (YES!!!!)

Since I doubt this would find its place at SST, it surely would perfectly fit this station as a worthy addition.
(If you think it would also be good for SST, why not?)
________________________________________________________________

Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004) was - as you all for sure know - a famous composer for filmmusic, but also he wrote some concert works, which aren't easy to be heard today since there are very few recordings of them available or known.

Goldsmith himself produced a CD with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2002, where he conducted the following pieces of his:

Music for Orchestra
Christus Apollo, cantata for narrator, mezzo-soprano, chorus & orchestra
Fireworks, A Celebration of Los Angeles, for orchestra

Amazon
-Link including audiosamples.

Except for "Fireworks", which was written in 1999, the other pieces were composed in the late 60ies.
Goldsmith used the 12-tone composition technique and other serialistic techniques like he also did in his infamous score for "Planet of the Apes" (1968) or in parts of "Logan's Run" (1976) or "Alien" (1979).
In the "Christus Apollo"-cantata you can actually feel how this piece will later lead to "The Omen" (1976), which brought Jerry Goldsmith the one and (shame on Hollywood) only Oscar he's ever won.
Of course for unexperienced listeners it may be a tough listen at first, but actually this kind of music ain't "modern" anymore in todays composing reception, which doesn't say it is bad music - quite the opposite!

I'd say it is a worthy addition for every musical station, whether it ends up at AFM or SST. Smile

Here are some Reviews (click)of the CD.
This album is also available as an SACD.

So what do you say?

I have this CD myself and it's a really good one... Smile

I voted yes, but mainly because it's Goldsmith.
