Frederick Delius - Delius: Tintner Memorial Edition - Vol 10 (Symphony Nova Scotia, Georg Tintner)
My Childhood Idol & is Still
By: Bonnie
Date: 10 Aug 2022

Delius was the first composer I heard as a child, & my Dad's enthusiasm for this fellow brought me to the same state. There is a sadness in so much of his Work; always goes deep for me.

Arthur Honegger - Honegger: Symphony No. 3 (New Zealand SO, Takuo Yuasa)
Pacific 231 Mouvement symphonique

Date: 2 Aug 2022

This piece is a Symphonic poem. It was one of the first pieces described to me as such. The piece really does capture the being of a steam locomotive. Enjoy!

Dear Gussie ~ Arghghgh!

Why he "composed" this I can NOT imagine. It is abstract in the extreme, goes no where, and is really, REALLY depressing to imagine that it was actually performed! The degree of difficulty is gigantic, but phooey! !!!!!!!

Bedrich Smetana - Ma Vlast (Antoni Wit)
Ma Vlast
By: horizon
Date: 31 Mar 2021

The second of the series, which includes 6 symphonic poems titled My Homeland (Má Vlast), is named after the "Moldau" river. This river originates in the Bohemian forests and travels throughout the Czech Republic. Smetana reflected the conversation of two instruments, which symbolize her gushing from two hot and cold springs at the time of her birth, with a flute and a clarinet. Then we set out to listen to the journey of the Moldau River with this lace-like tune: the chilling setting of the Bohemian forests, the flow of the river across a wide plain, the witness of a village wedding, the dance of nymphs in the moonlight, a hunting scene, the splendor of Prague Castle are illustrated in turn. Eventually the river will meet the Elbe and the waters will embrace each other. This legendary work appeared in 1874, when the composer was completely deaf.
"I have illustrated my life with sounds," says Smetana.

Jacques Offenbach, Claude Debussy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (...) - Karajan: Intermezzo
Black List
By: horizon
Date: 7 Sep 2020

One of the world's most famous orchestra conductors. Music virtuosity, which started with playing the piano, continues with the conducting of the orchestra. Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is synonymous with him.
"Herbert von Karajan" born in Austria.
No words to his music, his talent! ..
The conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra between 1938 and 1945, under Hitler ...
He became a member of the Nazi Party in Germany in 1933, and whenever Hitler wishes, he conducts concerts in Hitler's presence.
When Hitler is defeated, he is charged with "collaborating with fascists". He is acquitted in court.
"When he goes to America in 1955 to give a concert, the American public protests him badly."
What kind of protest? ..
"Nobody goes to his concert, very, very few tickets are sold, the big hall is empty! .."
Even though he was conducting the orchestra in various cities in the following years, he could never erase the "fascism label" attached to him until his death, like the traces of the empty hall in America.

Joaquin Rodrigo , Joaquin Rodrigo - Concierto de Aranjuez, Concierto Andaluz (Asturias Symphony Orchestra, Maximiano Valdes)
Actually a lament !
By: horizon
Date: 9 May 2020

In 1936, military fascist forces under the command of General Franco, supported by Hitler and Mussolini in Spain, rose against the "People's Front" coalition of the socialists who came to power through the election. Spain was dragged into a bloody, terrible civil war in front of the eyes of the world…

The blind maestro, in 1939, "Concierto de Aranjuez", which he wrote to his wife Victoria (Turkish Pianist Victoria Kamhi) in chapters, described this war.

The concerto voiced the civil war that killed 600 thousand people, the hopeful enthusiasm of the revolutionaries who resisted fascism on the fronts, and the suffering and persecution of the dictator Franco, who took over the administration!

Franz Liszt - Liszt: Mephisto-Waltz Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 (Giuseppe Andaloro)
This 22:57 minute long virtuoso impossibility fails b/c it repea
By: bonnie
Date: 2 May 2020

This 27:57 minute long virtuoso impossibility fails b/c it repeats his angry phrases over & over & over. It probably took the pianist years to learn, but how unnerving emotionally it must have been!

Only SAM would pick it to fill time, methinks. If anyone cares to disagree, I'd love to hear about it!
