Um, I thought Strauss wrote waltzes and his name was Johann.

Is anyone else in agreement with me that AFM could use more Richard Strauss Tone Poems? This is tricky though: There are already two versions of Also Sprach Zaranthustra in the playlist. The Andre Previn CD also contains Death and Transfiguration, and the Herbert von Karajan CD also contains Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Don Juan, and Salome: Dance of the Seven Veils.

It looks like the Previn recording is actually part of a 4-disc set of The Essential Richard Strauss, of which Previn himself is said to have regarded as his favorite of all his many recordings.

I would recommend either ordering the set or by purchasing one or more of the remaining discs separately:

1. Don Juan / Don Quixote:

3. Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony):

4. Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) / Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs)

I am primarily interested in Ein Heldenleben, a fantastic piece! And it comes with the wonderful Four Last Songs.

Of course, there's also Richard Strauss: The Complete Tone Poems, a 6-CD set, which for $39.97 could be a real bargain:

Unfortunately, there are no audio clips for this set on the Amazon site, so I would wonder about the sound quality, though the London/Decca recordings are usually pretty solid.

**edit: I found audio clips for this set at Allmusic.**

So, what do you think? Please vote in the poll!

Haino,

I'm glad you like it; I think this is one of the 20th Century's greatest orchestral works.

And thanks to Saff for adding this album!! Very Happy

(I suppose this thread should be moved to the 'Added' Forum now.) Smile

Enjoy everyone!

Mr. Green
