Queen Elisabeth Competition

A competition for young pianists, singers, violinists and composers from all over the world, established in 1937 and held in Belgium.
Amongs the first prize laureats are Ashkenazy, Kogan, Afanassiev...
The full list of the laureats

Some history: "Already in the 1900s Eugène Ysaÿe had a clear idea of a what an international competition should be like. As a friend of Anton Rubinstein, he was acquainted with the competition that bore the latter's name; several of his friends and partners had been laureates, among them Ferruccio Busoni and Émile Bosquet. The Rubinstein Competition, held every five years and open to pianists and composers, was never continued after the Russian Revolution. As for the Warsaw Chopin Competition founded in 1927, though it might have been considered a model piano competition, it was essentially intended to cultivate good performers of Chopin. What Ysaÿe wanted was a competition for young virtuosos with extremely broad-ranging programmes that included contemporary music, that brought out the technical and artistic maturity of the candidates and that would launch them on their careers."
