Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, which some have called the greatest choral work EVER written, can easily be mentioned in the same breath with the Bach B minor Mass and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis for sheer emotional power but it gets the edge, IMHO, in regard to the exquisite beauty of sound that surrounds one in any of the many great performances of the work. The Tavernor Consort under the baton of Andrew Parrott is superb, but there are also the two performances by John Eliot Gardner, or the King's Consort under Robert King, or my favorite, the Phillipe Herrewege. The Parrott has the added grace of being very inexpensive. _________________ Den Nacht gebar,

I'm not a fan of Monteverdi and in general of the earliest italian opera, but Vespers is the only exception for me. I've heared only this version: http://www.amazon.com/Monteverdi-Vespro-della-Beata-Vergine/dp/B000004247 with J.E.Gardiner, R.Tear, J.Bowman ..., and was very impressed. I hope the requested one is no worse and certainly more authentic, given the involvement of such eminent persons as E.Kirkby, D.Thomas, R.Covey-Crump.
Great YES by me! |
