|
Everyone knows Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber for his musicals, but did you know he wrote an entire Requiem Mass as a concert work? A fine recording of Lloyd Webber's Requiem is available at Amazon:
As hinted by the cover art, Lloyd Webber's requiem is a bit darker than most, and he apparently took some liberties with the traditional text. Thus, this modern Requiem stands on its own and would be a nice addtion to the playlist. Check the links above for clips and reviews.
Track List:
1. Requiem: Requiem & Kyrie
2. Requiem: Dies Irae ... Rex Tremendae
3. Requiem: Recordare
4. Requiem: Ingemisco ... Lacrymosa
5. Requiem: Offertorium
6. Requiem: Hosanna
7. Requiem: Pie Jesu
8. Requiem: Lux Aeterna & Libera Me
Editorial Review
Before Andrew Lloyd Webber's seemingly endless run of Broadway shows, when he was known primarily for Jesus Christ Superstar, he managed to write this dramatic, tuneful, occasionally powerful religious work. Although Lloyd Webber takes some liberties with the text and organization of the traditional Requiem mass, the result is a unified and finely crafted composition. There are exciting moments in the "Dies irae" and in the "Lacrymosa", where voices and orchestra are most effectively used to convey the desperate yet hopeful feeling of the text. This work isn't performed much these days in its entirety, but, as in many of Lloyd Webber's musicals, it produced a "hit" tune--the "Pie Jesu"--whose popularity alone could have kept the composer living comfortably for the rest of his life. --David Vernier

LOL, Luther, I passed all day with amazon page opened to listen its samples. I did it right now.
In spite of too short samples, I could perceive that this Sir Webber's work fits here. I'm specially courious to listen "Lux Aeterna & Libera Me". I think it is a great piece.
So, I vote yes _________________ "If I decide to be an idiot, then I'll be an idiot on my own accord."

I love Requiems in general!! Sounds like a winner to me! _________________ Though everything else may appear shallow and repulsive, even the smallest task in music is so absorbing, and carries us so far away from town, country, earth, and all worldly things, that it is truly a blessed gift of God.

I'm sorry, but no matter how hard I try every time ALW's name is mentioned I can't think of anything else other than Jesus Christ Superstar. |

You know... maybe it's because I'm 27... but I've never seen Jesus Christ Superstar.... *shrug* _________________ Though everything else may appear shallow and repulsive, even the smallest task in music is so absorbing, and carries us so far away from town, country, earth, and all worldly things, that it is truly a blessed gift of God.
