I don't know if this has been discussed yet, but is this site only going to feature orchestral music? Being a band guy, I know there's all sorts of great music written for and performed by symphonic and concert bands. I'm not talking transcriptions or arrangements too, just straight up written for Band. The music is harder to find (recordings), and usually performed at the college level, but if I come across something good like David Maslanka (awesome), would that be donatable?

Being a band geek also, I am not opposed to band music on the site. Just email me with what it is you would like to donate.

Thanks!
Saff

Hey jackk, I'm glad you mentioned this (also once a band geek). I'm sure we don't want to inundate the queue with wind band music, but I certainly would not be opposed to including some of the better band music here. Smile

David Maslanka... good choice. While much of his music is rather avant-garde, I would highly recommend his Symphony No. 4.

I would also recommend Alfred Reed.

Oh, and Johan de Meij, especially his Symphony No. 1 - 'The Lord of the Rings'... a wonderful piece for concert band.

I played Maslanka's #4 back at Florida State.....killer piece. Meij's LOTR is very cool, I love the hobbit's movement.

Other people to consider:

Philip Sparke
Holst - first suite in E-flat
Percy Grainger - Anything by him is good
Frank Ticheli - Does really good stuff
Phillip Glass
Hindemith - Symphonic Metamorphosis
Donald Grantham - Southern Harmony

I see Johan de Meij's The Lord of the Rings symphony was added. Yay! I also saw some Percy Grainger. Good stuff.

Thanks for these additions, Saff!

You're very welcome Saff! By the way, that recording of the de Meij symphony was the best I've ever heard. Excellent choice!

There is a relatively new recording out featuring some of David Maslanka's best works performed by the Dallas Wind Symphony.

It contains his biggest hit, A Child's Garden of Dreams, his worthy In Memoriam, and his amazing (and my personal favorite work of his) Symphony No. 4. Cool

This is the first time some of this work has been professional performed and recorded. Usually Universities will contract a local recordist to print a disc of one of their performances.

I've posted a request thread in the Request forum.

"I'm glad you brought up this point! While orchestral music is prominent, there's a wealth of fantastic compositions for concert bands too, like David Maslanka's works. Including band music would diversify the site's offerings and showcase the talent in this genre. Definitely worth considering for donation!"
