I wonder if on this station it would be appropriate (and feasible) to index albums and works in a more intelligent fasion than album, artist, track, which works so well for pop music.

For starters, I would suggest including fields for Composer as well as Performer(s), i.e:

Album: Beethoven: Symphonies Nos 1-9
Composer: Ludwig von Beethoven
Performer(s): Bernard Haitink, London Symphony Orchestra

Future additions might include listing by work as well as movement (track).

Of course, these are probably encoded automatically when ripped, so I don't know how easy it would be to implement.... Just an idea.

That's a great idea. Hopefully this is technically possible.

Luther Nice first post and welcome to AFM Smile

I like the idea (hopefully they will write the composer name as Ludwig vAn Beethoven Wink ). I think it is technically possible, but I do not know how hard it is to implement.

Welcome Luther Smile

Identify the performer is as important as is the composer. I only add to your idea the importance of separate performer from maestro.

The current organization schema is implemented as a module of phpNuke (the software that supports the station). All 24seven stations use this software. So, it's important to have some sort of homogeneity among organization schemas (of several stations) in order to have the same software code and the same database structure.

So, it would be a huge work to modify the software, screens and tables (of databases) to support new fields. I know, as you all know, that classical music have particulars that popular music don't have. Nevertheless, it would be better if it would be possible to conform the composer/performer/maestro demand in the current Artist field.

As we have search engines to list occurrences of Artists content variations, it could work. For this:
- It's essential to have names consistency; and
- The Artist field length should support large contents.

Glad you are here Luther!

I love your idea but for right now we are limited to what you currently see as categories. This would take some programming and since we all work for free and our programmers are very busy I doubt this will change for a long time.

Since I am the one that tags all of this music I have a few things to say. There is definitely a lot more information for me to get across than compared to Entranced (the other station where I run the playlist). I thought a lot about how to set up the tags as I was initially getting the music ready for play. In general, it takes me three to four times longer to prepare this music for upload than the normal "pop" songs.

Here is how I go about setting these albums up to include artists and other information that is specific to the classical music genre.

Artist: Ludwig van Beethoven
Since we do not have a "Composer" tag in nuke, I am using "Artist" for the composer. I am also NOT imputing it as Beethoven, Ludwig van. While it would make searching by first letter more convenient, it would look odd in the queue and Now Playing. And you can always use the "Artist" search and pull up the composer as well.

Also, you may see a few variations on the Composer's name, i.e. Rachmaninov, Rachmaninoff. This is meant to be. I will be entering the name on the album itself to match whatever the label choose to print.

Album: Beethoven: Symphonies Nos 1-9 (Bernard Haitink, London Symphony Orchestra)
Whenever the Album title is vague and only has, for example Symphony No. 3, I will include the last name of the composer. This will save lots of frustration when searching by Album.

I went back and forth when I started entering the music about where to put the "performing artist(s)". Originally, I had it with the composer under artist but it was very cluttered in the queue and in my internal filing system. So, I moved it behind the Album title. I like it here. It takes a bit of a leap to think to use the Search/Album for the performers but I think we can train folks.

NOTE: any "various artists" albums will simply not have the same amount of info. It would require an incredible amount of time to get all the info added and my goal is not have the various artists albums on Adagio for a long time. They are here just to get us through until the playlist is more robust.

Song: Symphony No. 9 'Choral': Adagio molto e cantabile
As everyone here is aware, many classical pieces are in general a large opus broken into several movements with similar titles. While titling each movement I will include the larger piece that it comes from. This again will help avoid confusion. You will know which symphony the adagio, allegro, etc. that is playing came from.

Genre: Classical
In this example, Beethoven falls into the period of "classical". The genre tag will represent what "classical" period that Composer lived and composed in.

NOTE: With any various artists or compilation albums, the nuke system cannot handle various "genres" in the tags. It will pull the first genre tag from song No. 1 and use that as the overall genre for the album. I found this out after tagging the Instrument: Trumpet and Rule Britannia albums. This is a bit of a pain since many of the compilation albums will be staying.

I hope that this answers some of your questions and the you can all see my logic behind how I am tagging these. Maybe someday the future when we are so popular that we can pay folks to code then we will have a more robust tagging system.

Thanks for your patient and thoughtful response, Saff! Smile

I've realized now that you do consistently list the performer in parentheses with the album, and I think this is a very worthy compromise, at least for the time being.

We all appreciate all the effort you and others put into this and all the stations, and especially for your patient willingness to listen to and implement ideas from all of us.

We all join in hoping that your efforts will pay off literally one day so you can devote all of your time to 24seven.fm... or better yet, pay someone else to do the coding!!

Many thanks for your hard work!!

I read the other posts and I'm aware of how difficult it is, to implement additional search functins. Nevertheless another idea of search method, which I miss:

the possibility of searching for an instrument/instrument group, e.g. cello (shows cello solo work like concertos, sonatas etc.) or symphony orchestra (results are symphonies) or string orchestra etc.

Maybe for the future, when there are enough ressources to implement this Wink I'd like it very much
