Translation: Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; which long for death but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; which rejoice exceedingly and are glad, when they can find the grave? Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in? (Job 3, 20-23)

The imposing opening Adagio (in D minor) of this motet, is punctuated four times by the urgent cry of Warum? (wherefore?). The following sections are in flowing cannon form with a 'warm F major glow' reflecting the text. It ends with a nunc dimittis in chorale form.

BTW, I'll be doing this piece in choir conducting this semester (though not sure if I'll conduct a concert performance of it...)
Personally I don't think this is the best performance of this wonderful, but very difficult piece, but it's the only one on youtube I've found so far that's at least good in pitch ^^

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847)
Psalm 2, op. 78 "Warum toben die Heiden?"
Mendelssohn composed this great piece in 1843 for the Cathedral Choir in Berlin. It is scored for double chorus and solo voices.
Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themseves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against His Anointed,
saying,
Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
