David Maslanka has to be one of the most important living wind band composers, and this disc is clearly meant to be the defining collection of his best work.
Admittedly, his most famous piece, A Child's Garden of Dreams is tonally free and a bit avant-garde for my taste. I am not very familiar with In Memoriam, but I will say the Symphony No. 4 is spectacular.
This is reviewed to be a very good perfomance by the highly-regarded Dallas Wind Symphony, and with a very good audio recording.
As always, the samples featured on the Amazon site leave something to be desired, but they will give you a feel for his composition style and the quality of the performance.
The problem I have with this album is that the single-movement Symphony is artificially broken into separate tracks. On the one hand, that makes for shorter requests, but I think hearing these bits apart from the overall context could really do this piece an injustice. If added, perhaps these tracks could be fused. (?)
These pieces won't be for everyone, but overall the album contains some of the best modern wind band music ever written.
